It’s been a busy summer. A great summer! Went to fast! Amazing weather! Great Guests; many who have stayed with us before…..it’s always nice to catch up.

And now into one of the most beautiful seasons of all…. Fall! The colours are changing every day!

(picture of office and docks taken from the beach)

The Hiking trails are so picturesque. And the air smells so fresh. It’s hard to come back to work.

(Our dog Popper on the hiking and biking trail that takes off from the resort)

With this time of year brings the migration of may species to the area. These swans stopped by for a few days visit with the geese on the river

This time of year the Northern Lights can be seen in the clear skies over the Whiteshell. They were just a dancing the other night

t can’t have happened! The winter is almost gone! It happened so fast!

It’s been a great winter. Not too cold and lots of sunshiny days and moonlit nights.

We had a lot of repeat guests join us – it’s always so nice to catch up. And a bunch of first timers that we hope will join us again soon. Thanks to all of you for helping to make our jobs so pleasant!

Nature Story from Mach 22nd to share:

Stu and I were at home in the morning before work. Stu spotted an eagle flying low over geese on the river. Just hassling them a bit. The Eagle didn’t really seem interested in the geese. It was more interested in something on the shore. It moved from spot to spot on the shore and looked like it was pulling on something.

Although the camera could not zoom in any more and not be fuzzy; our telescope could pick up the feathers on it’s back. After watching for a bit we realized that it was pulling at twigs. We assume it was getting materials for it’s nest.

As I put down the camera and took over the telescope the eagle had landed near the open water and was frantically shaking it’s leg. I focused in to see it had somehow got a twig caught on it’s foot. He could not get it off and was having trouble taking off because of it. He kicked and scrapped with the other foot but the twig would not come off.

Then suddenly the ice beneath the eagle gave way and the eagle went down. Right under the water! We could see splashes as it wings beet on the water. Then there was nothing. Not even a head. I felt sick and pulled away from the telescope. Stu pointed. And I turned to see it tried once again to get out of the water. A third time it’s head went down. The seconds seemed like minutes.

Through my mind raced the thought that we were witnessing a disaster and could do nothing to help. In those seconds I tried to calculate how long it would take me to run to the point and then what could I do once I got there. Stu , at the same moment was considering how long it would take him to get a canoe down to that spot, and what he would do once he got there.

Just as we were about to give up hope, the eagle surfaced. I can’t even tell you how. Just all of a sudden it jumped out of the water onto frozen ice. I know it could not have jumped but next thing we knew it was on the ice a few feet from the open water. We could see that the twig /branch was gone from his foot. He must got it off under the water. Maybe that’s why it took so long for the eagle to surface. I must have been very cold as it just sat there for a few minutes

Stu and I stood there, totally elated, as we watched the eagle fly away.

With all that is happening in the world, our hearts were a little lighter watching it sore!

In this last picture the eagle is seems almost translucent against the background.

I apologize for the quality of picture. Lighting was bad and I was a long way away.

But great story! I just had to share!

Take care

Judy

Gosh the middle of October. How did that happen!! But what a month we are having with an abundance of sunny warm days… We had a guests swimming on the 8th , NO not me; but guests from France who swim in the ocean and said they didn’t find the Lake too cold. Burrrrrrr

Fishing has been good. Lots of wildlife around.

WHATS NEW:

We have our Christmas and New Years rates posted. . For those of you who would like a quiet natural Christmas at the Lake; new this year we are offering “7 and 10 Night Holidays encompassing Christmas and New Years

And for those who have holidays between now and Dec 16th please check out our 7 Night Specials on our Rates!!

NATURE ENCOUNTER:

Look what came for a visit the other morning.

We heard Popper barking at something just off the deck. I headed out with my camera because Popper doesn’t often bark unless he has seen an animal.

Sure enough he had treed this adult female..

and when we looked over to the next tree we saw three young ones.

The third is here – hidden by the tree branch (on ever single picture). Once we stepped out onto the deck they did not move. Maybe they thought if they were very still we could not see them. After taking a few more pictures we stepped back inside; calling Popper to join us. After she was sure they were safe; Mom gave the little ones the ok and they scurried down the tree and were gone.

As I had never seen Raccoons here before; I talked with some of the elders in the area. They told me that Raccoons were not native to this area but were transplanted here ten plus years ago and they have thrived.

I know they can get into a lot of mischief … but they sure do have a cute face

The water has been wonderful for swimming; so soft with the abundance of fresh rainwater.

The fishing was good right through the summer months. Krista caught her first Crappy. It was a good size.

And the berries. We were picking Raspberries along the hiking trails right up to August 21st. I can’t ever remember berries on the vines this late in the season.

Of course, the greatest highlights were the visits with our guests. We had many return guests stay with us again this summer; so nice to “catch up”. Plus it’s always fun to assist new guests in their discovery of our beautiful Whiteshell Provincial Park.

And now on to one of the most beautiful seasons to visit the Whiteshell …. Fall!

A NATURE STORY

We often see Blue Herons on the river.

About a month ago Stu and I had the most amazing opportunity to watch a Blue Heron fishing for its evening meal. We had a good telescope and were able to observe for quite a while. And that’s what it took… quite a while. The bird stood along the shore, so still that at times we lost it among the reeds. It did not appear that he was even looking down at the water. His head was as still as his body. ( can you find the Heron on the right hand side.

Stu had his eye to the telescope for over 5 minutes. Just as he was about to look away; down it went; so smooth and without the slightest bit of effort. When the Heron brought its head up, there was a fish between its bills. The fish was still wriggling as the Heron tossed it into the air. It went up broadside and came down pointing straight into the Heron’s mouth. Through the telescope Stu actually watched the Heron’s neck enlarge and contract as the fish went down. The Heron stood there a few minutes longer and then, on great long legs, it stepped gingerly along the shore to the next fishing spot. Amazing creatures; so well designed for their life.

The Blue Heron in this story was too far away for me to photograph but I have added some pictures of other sightings.

On shore and even in trees they stand so still

Finally, I would like to invite any of our guests who have photos and stories they would like to share to send them to me and space permitting, I will post them on the Blog.

Hope this finds everyone having a great day!!

Hi

We have revamp our Web Site and thought it a good time to jump into the techno world; and add a BLOG.

Stu and I bought in April 1979 and we have made Inverness Falls our home for the last 30 years. We raised our daughter Krista here and now she is working with us; and her daughter is growing up at the lake. For those of you, who have not stay with us yet; we live in a little piece of paradise and each and every day we acknowledge that gift.

2010 our 31st spring/summer at Inverness Falls Resort has produced some excellent fishing, some great wildlife viewing opportunities; and right now we are enjoying the wild blue berries, raspberries and strawberries, growing along the hiking trails.

Nature Story Spring/ Early Summer, we have a number of repeat guests of the four legged; hard shelled kind. The Snapping Turtles and Painted Turtles return to the property, each year, to lay their eggs. It is such a pain staking process to watch. The little mother will start digging with her hind feet. Hours and hours is takes to get a hole big enough to house her eggs. Once the hole is large enough she will start to lay the eggs. A few contractions and a few eggs fall to form the first layer. Then she will carefully cover those eggs by sweeping small amounts of the loose sand or dirt she dug out of the hole.. Once that layer is covered she starts all over. Over and over again. The process can take a whole day. During this time she is very vulnerable to predators but once she has started her birthing process she has to see it through. A Mother Snapping Turtle can lay up to 25-80 eggs each year with an incubation period of 9-18 weks. In cooler climates, hatchlings overwinter in the nest.

The little Painted Turtles lay from 4-15 eggs but can do that a few times a year. These eggs will hatch in 10-12 weeks.

When the last egg is laid and covered she will rest for just a moment before moving toward the water. In her state of exhaustion the few feet to the stream must seem like forever.

It seems so tragic and yet so brave!. She works so hard to create these little beings and yet will never know them as her own.

This Snapping Turtle had just made it too the stream and was resting on a rock in the sun before swimming off.

With the development of digital cameras, Photography has grown in popularity… and the Whiteshell offers so many amazing photographic opportunities. This blog will offer me an opportunity to share with you some of what I see. I would also invite anyone of our guest who have photos and stories they would like to share to send them to me and space permitting, I would post them on the blog.

Hope this find everyone having a great day!!
